Toni’s Sushi Bar has undergone a huge makeover to mark its 40th anniversary, filling the space with bamboo waves and a fusion of contemporary design and Japanese tradition that are all quite impressive.
Collaborating with New York-based KONO Designs and four traditional craftsmen who flew in from Japan to lend their knowledge, the new and improved space boasts five tons of bamboo imported from the mountains of Kyoto.
In Japanese culture, bamboo is a symbol of strength and beauty, but also has unwavering flexibility that allows for it to be shaped into form when treated and cut in particular ways. So naturally, bamboo throughout the restaurant was transformed into dramatic shapes and archways, forming an enchanting bamboo tunnel over sunken tables and a dynamic bamboo wave that appears to “crash” over the sushi bar.
Kevin and Yoko Takarada, the sibling leadership team behind Toni’s, embarked on the heartfelt redesign in memory of their late parents, who founded the restaurant. From the materials used to the overall look and feel, KONO Designs strived to make the sushi landmark as visually stunning as it is legendary, serving the city for four decades.
But its sleek new look isn’t the only thing to ogle at. Renowned for its amazing service and exquisite sushi creations, locals and visitors alike flock to its seats for delicious items such as Salmon Carpaccio, Bluefin Toro Tartar and Dreaming Shrimp Roll, among other dishes.
