If you happen to be out of weekend plans and are also named Ryan, there’s an exclusive get-together that’s made just for you. The Ryan Meetup, a non-profit organization made for people named Ryan by people named Ryan, is taking over Miami. Since its beginnings in NYC last year, the group has made its way to Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago and now, the Magic City.
Fittingly, Miami’s gathering will be dubbed Ryami Vice, with an ’80s theme that’ll pay homage to the decade that made the name popular. According to the Social Security Administration’s database, the name Ryan peaked in 1991 as the 11th most popular name for boys. That year, 27,534 boys with that name were born. For women, the name Ryan peaked at 342 in 1986.
Ryami Vice will take place on Saturday, May 18th, at Barsecco in Brickell. Bouncers may be checking IDs, but they won’t be looking at ages — they’ll be looking at names. Make sure to put on your best outfit and a DJ, obviously named Ryan, will play the best hits from the era.
The idea for the event is simple: Ryans of all ages and genders come together to connect and revel in the beauty of their shared name. Having gathered upwards of 200 attendees at its events, the Brooklyn-based organization’s ultimate goal is to break the world record for the largest same-name gathering in history, which is currently held by a group of 2,325 Ivans in 2017.
According to their website, if your name is also spelled Ryann, Ryon, Rian or something that phonetically still sounds like “Ryan,” you’re welcome to join. Just as long as you’re not named Bryan. Sorry folks.
You can sign up for Ryami Vice for free on their website — as long as your name is, well, Ryan. Those named Kyle will “be required to pay a $1000 cover.” The event will take place at Barsecco, 1421 S. Miami Ave., on Saturday, May 18, from 6 to 10pm.
