As maintenance and improvements are underway, Miami-Dade Transit announced a yearlong closure of the Metromover’s Inner Loop starting later this year.
In a tweet posted to X, formerly Twitter, the county said the closure will last over a year. No exact date has been announced.
The Inner Loop takes riders through downtown Miami, with stops in Bayfront Park, the Knight Center and Government Center. It is one of three routes the Metromover offers, the others being the Omni loop and the Brickell loop.
The announcement came as a surprise to many, as the Inner Loop serves as a major route for daily commuters and tourists alike. Residents have already expressed displeasure with the plan.
During the closure, major systems will be replaced and newly retrofitted cars will be tested, as the Metromover currently undergoes a $150 million upgrade. Construction began back in 2022. Once the work is complete, rides will be more reliable and frequent, and rehabilitating the track will extend its lifespan to another 30 years. The system has been in service for over 30 years, first opening to the public in 1986.
