Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on Monday, January 16 this year, opening up the day to learn, reflect, give back and celebrate the Civil Rights leader. Miami, a city he spent a lot of time in, is no different. There are many events to participate in on the momentous day, from a celebratory parade and performance art to service projects and a fitness walk.
Here are a few ways you can celebrate Martin Luther King Day this year in Miami:
1. Join the 46th Annual MLK Day Parade

Liberty City’s annual MLK Day Parade, running along NW 54th Street from 10th to 32nd Avenue, will once again commemorate the eight mile route Dr. King frequently traveled during his time in Miami. The parade is comprised of high school marching bands, dance and drill teams, cheerleaders, local politicians and community leaders. This is one of the country’s oldest and largest MLK celebrations, drawing crowds of more than 500,000 in years past.

2. Get your fitness on at the MLK Health & Hope Community 5K & Empowerment Party

Start your day with a community 5K run/walk, followed by an empowerment party that will include music, food, a community panel, giveaways and other prizes. The event is run by Running Edge 305, Black Men Build and ERace The Hate.

3. Participate in an Overtown bike ride

Friends of The Underline has organized a bike ride through Overtown, one of Miami’s most historic neighborhoods. During the ride, which begins at the Brickell Metrorail Station, churches, museums, theaters and historic homes will all be highlighted. Participants can either bring their own bikes or rent a Citibike nearby. The event is free, but registration is required.

4. Visit a National Park for free

One of the many things you could do on Martin Luther King Day is visit a stunning national park for free, like the Everglades. To honor King’s birthday, National Park Service sites will waive entrance fees for everyone on Monday, January 16, as the first free fee day of the year.

5. Head to the annual Homestead/Florida City Community Breakfast

Honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King at a free community breakfast at the Phichol Williams Community Center. This year’s gathering will be themed “The Power of the Dream,” which will highlight how King’s dream lives on and one’s own dreams can empower communities to strive for equity and inclusion at all levels. Attendees can expect an inspiring address from keynote speaker Dr. Anthony Reed of Martin Memorial AME. Reservation to the breakfast is required.

6. Get hands on with an MLK Day Service Project

If you’re looking to be selfless and give back to the community, volunteer at the Belafonte Tacolcy Center this year. Hosted by Greater Miami Service Corps, in collaboration with various other local groups, volunteer efforts include painting, mulching, litter removal and plantings. Breakfast snacks and refreshments will be provided.

7. View “The Gaze Africana: An Exhibit of African Excellence”

AfriKin Foundation, in collaboration with the North Miami CRA, are presenting a contemporary fine art exhibition in honor of King’s legacy. The exhibition, which features a distinctive line-up of international Black artists and creatives whose works represent African Excellence, will coincide with Black History Month in February as well. Programs surrounding “The Gaze Africana” include contemporary dance, jazz and negro spiritual performances, panel discussions and spoken word.
