Remember last month when South Florida was essentially melting, even breaking records for the hottest day of the year? Well, it’s definitely not over.
South Florida, including Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and the Keys, are under an Excessive Heat Warning through 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will reach the mid to upper 90s across the region, with heat index values (feels-like temperatures) up to 116 degrees.
This is following yesterday’s Excessive Heat Warning, which had been the first time the warning “has ever been issued for Palm Beach, Hendry, and Glades counties,” the National Weather Service tweeted.
According to the National Weather Service, a Excessive Heat Warning is a category above a Heat Advisory and goes into effect “when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be 105° or higher for at least 2 days and night time air temperatures will not drop below 75°.”
To stay safe in the heat, people are urged to stay indoors as much as possible, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes, drink plenty of water and check up on relatives and neighbors. It’s important to watch out for signs of heat-related illnesses and seek medical attention when there are symptoms. For more on how to beat the heat, click here.
Last month, Miami International Airport reached a record high temperature of 98 degrees, marking the hottest temperature on record since 1942, when it was just 95 degrees! It also became the hottest day this year in Miami, according to NWS. Fort Lauderdale International Airport was also feeling the heat, tying the old daily record at 97 degrees.
Stay cool and safe, South Florida!
