South Florida is officially in summer mode, with plenty of rainy days once second and scorching hot days the next. This week, we’ll see days in the latter as a heat advisory is in effect for South Florida, including Miami-Dade, Broward and the Keys. For Miami-Dade and Broward, the advisory kicks in at 10 a.m. and lasts until 6 p.m. Monday, while Monroe County’s advisory runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures will reach the low to mid-90s across the region, with heat indices reaching 105 to 110 degrees. The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is considered along with the actual air temperature.
A heat advisory is issued when a heat index of 105 degrees or higher is expected for at least two hours in Miami-Dade. For Broward and the Florida Keys, it’s slightly higher with a heat index of 107 degrees for two hours.
Heat safety
In the event of excessive heat, the NWS and county officials advise the public to take extra precautions. Stay indoors when possible and be sure to hydrate, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes, check up on relatives and neighbors and be sure to avoid strenuous work or activities outdoors during the hottest hours of the day. It’s important to watch out for signs of heat-related illnesses and seek medical attention when there are symptoms. For more on how to beat the heat, visit miamidade.gov/heat.
