World Ocean Day might fall on Thursday, June 8, but the fight to raise awareness and keep our oceans protected is a year-long effort. This weekend, you can get involved and make a positive impact locally with activities set forth by W South Beach, which is hosting the third annual World Ocean Celebration.
Open to the public, the unforgettable weekend begins on June 3rd at 8 a.m. on Collins Park Beach (22nd Street) with an open water exhibition swim with Full Circle Coaching, pilates on the beach with Pilates for the People and a ceremonial paddle-out with the Surfrider Foundation.
The International SeaKeepers Society and GEN2050 will also lead a fun and engaging Citizen Science Beach Blitz while a beach cleanup with SeaKeepers and Clean Miami Beach will comb the coast removing litter from the shoreline.
The hotel partnered with like-minded organizations Blue Scholars Initiative and ARTSail, with support from Boucher Brothers, to create the exciting roster of programming, which also features art activations! On display at the beach through noon are an immersive sound experience and art flags by Marina Zurkow and Ocean Art Murals by Linda Cheung & Jamie Nolan.
For kids, there will be ocean education opportunities like readings from Wavy Adventures, a swimming instruction with a “mermaid” and ocean-themed art with Frost Science MUVE.
The celebration continues Saturday evening in the W South Beach’s Great Room with the Sheroes of the Ocean panel discussion beginning at 5 p.m., followed by a film screening of the San Francisco-based International Ocean Film Festival at 7 p.m. The panel will highlight the stories of inspiring women from the activist, scientific and creative space, who are engaged with the preservation of our ocean.
The following day, on June 4th beginning at 11 a.m., the Frost Museum of Science will host local conservationists to speak about what they are doing to save our coral reefs, protect our coastlines and raise awareness about the importance of clean, healthy oceans. Scientists will talk about marine animals and plants, cleaning plastic from the oceans and more.
Food@Science, the cafe at Frost Science, will serve Lionfish Ceviche and the team at Constellation Culinary Group will also set up a special grill station and bar within the museum’s Dan Bell Atrium. Sustainable menu items like Shrimp Tacos and Salmon Poke will be served.
Across the globe, World Ocean Day is an opportunity to come together and celebrate the ocean, raise awareness of its vital role in sustaining a healthy planet and inspire action to protect the planet’s waters. For a complete schedule of the third-annual World Ocean Weekend Celebration, click here.
