Hurricane warnings have been issued for parts of east Florida as Tropical Storm Nicole is expected to strengthen over the next few days. Having formed on Monday morning, the tropical storm is forecast to make landfall in Florida as a hurricane or a strong tropical storm.
There is no better time than now to prepare for the potential heavy rainfall and other impacts. Across South Florida, there will be several free sand distribution centers:
Miami
The City of Miami is distributing sandbags to residents starting Tuesday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at three city parks:
- Little Haiti Park, 6301 NE Second Avenue
- Grapeland Park, 1550 NW 37th Avenue
- Douglas Park, 2755 SW 37th Avenue
Miami Springs
The City of Miami Springs will provide free sand distribution at the Miami Springs Community Center (1401 Westward Drive) on Tuesday, starting at 7:30 a.m. Sandbags will not be provided, so everyone in need of sand must bring their own bags. Residents must show proof of residency and there is a limit of five sandbags per household.

North Miami Beach
The City of North Miami Beach will be distributing sandbags on Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Wednesday, Nov. 9, from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Distribution will take place at the City of North Miami Beach Fleet Maintenance Building, located at 1965 NE 151 Street. Upon arrival, residents must show a valid ID upon arrival to collect up to 4 sandbags per household.

Cooper City
Sandbags will be available at the Public Works Complex (9070 SW 51st Street) from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. There is a limit of seven sand bags per household and proof of Cooper City residency is required. Residents also need to be physically present to fill up the sandbags.

Fort Lauderdale
The City of Fort Lauderdale will be distributing sand bags at Mills Pond Park at 2201 NW 9th Avenue beginning Tuesday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Bags will be limited to six per car while supplies last. Proof of City of Fort Lauderdale residency is required and residents are also required to bring their own shovels.
Sunny Isles Beach
Sandbags will be available Tuesday for Sunny Isles Beach residents with a resident ID card under the William Lehman Causeway at 19160 Collins Avenue from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Limit 6 sandbags per household.
Pompano Beach
The City of Pompano Beach will be distributing sandbags Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. or while supplies last. The distribution area is located at 1660 NE 10th Street across from the Pompano Airpark. Proof of residency is required and sandbags will be limited to a maximum of 10 bags per household.
Deerfield Beach
Sandbags are available for residents only starting at 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at 210 Goolsby Boulevard. Residents will be limited to 10 bags per household.
