Although Buenos Aires remains the world capital of tango, the neighborhoods of Little Havana and Little Buenos Aires in Miami have become Florida’s own San Telmo and Boedo. Needless to say, tango has been present in Miami’s dance scene for decades and this season, it will thrive again thanks to “We Call It Tango” in Miami. The Argentine music and couple dance is known for its sensuality and passion, and it will soon be masterfully projected through the haunting wails of the bandoneon and two dancers’ close embrace.
Tango enthusiasts can relish in classic tangos from the Epoca de Oro as well as fine examples of tango nuevo, including Piazzolla’s “Libertango”. The show will be available on selected dates over the coming months and places are limited so make sure to secure your spot before tickets sell out.
What is “We Call It Tango”?
“We Call It Tango” in Miami is an ode to the Argentine music genre and dance. It tells the story of tango in three acts and thirteen dances, representing the different styles and subgenres. As the stirring melodies of the bandoneon and piano echo through the room, guests can witness two tango dancers lock eyes, give a cabeceo (nod to accept the invitation to dance), slowly step forward and proceed to dance.
Tango, its music and the show
Tango comes in many forms, from traditional Argentine tango developed in the end of the 19th century to nostalgic milonga and the more innovative tango nuevo. For this reason, “We Call It Tango” will take you on a journey through tango’s many varieties. Expect to hear covers of love songs like “Vida Mia” by musical legend Osvaldo Fresedo (aka “El pibe de La Paternal”) or “Desde el Alma”, made famous by Francisco Canaro and canción criolla singer Nelly Omar.
Additionally, the show mixes songs that speak of heartache and grief, such as “Adios Nonino” and “El Andariego”, melodies that summarize everything we feel when losing a loved one. These compositions have become a symbol of the genre, but also of the Argentine diaspora. Now, you can hear them too, just a tap and twist away!
Tango can connect with anyone and make its listeners feel love, longing, melancholy and hope. While it began in bars and dancehalls, this season, you can catch “We Call It Tango” right around the corner in Miami.
The show is coming to The 305 on selected dates over the coming months and you can see them below.
