Already thinking about next year’s vacation plans? If Europe is on your radar, you may already be aware of the upcoming travel requirement, known as ETIAS, to visit numerous European countries by 2025. But Americans will also need to take an extra step before taking a domestic flight next year: getting their REAL ID.
But what exactly is a REAL ID, how do you get a hold of one and why is it essential? We’re here to help catch you up on everything you need to know:
What is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a federally recognized form of identification for domestic air travel, and to enter nuclear power plants and certain federal facilities. It contains a star stamp on the upper right corner.
When will you need a REAL ID?
REAL IDs will be required to board domestic aircrafts, as well as access certain federal facilities by May 7, 2025. The deadline was originally May 3, 2023, but it was extended forward two years due to the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why do you need a REAL ID?
Established by the Real ID Act, which was passed by Congress in 2005, REAL IDs strengthen national security and set higher security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.
How can you get a REAL ID in Florida?
The good news is you probably have a REAL ID if you received a new or renewed Florida driver’s license or ID since January 2010. If you’d like to verify if your card is REAL ID compliant, it should have a gold star on the top right. If there isn’t a star, find your nearest driver license service center to get a new credential.
Basic requirements needed for a REAL ID include your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, two proofs of address of principal residence and legal status.
How much does a REAL ID cost?
Costs differ depending on the state. In Florida, the fee for an original Class E license (which includes a learner’s permit) is $48 and a commercial driver’s license is $75. The fee for an ID is $25. An additional $6.25 service fee may apply at a tax collector office.
