It’s been a whopping 41 years since Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas graced our screens as undercover detectives in Miami Vice. And now, a new film based on the iconic NBC series is on its way to the big screen!
According to Deadline, the team behind the forthcoming project will feature director Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick,” “F1”) and screenplay writer Dan Gilroy (“Nightcrawler,” “The Bourne Legacy”) for Universal Pictures. Gilroy will take on an initial draft from Eric Warren Singer and Dylan Clark will be producing alongside Kosinski.
About the upcoming Miami Vice film
The original show ran for five seasons between 1984 and 1990, starring undercover cops Crockett (Johnson) and Tubbs (Thomas). Created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive-produced by Michael Mann, the cult-classic crime drama is best remembered for its vibrant aesthetics and synth-driven soundtrack.
A film adaptation of the series followed in 2006, receiving mixed reviews from audiences and critics alike. Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell starred as the leads and Mann returned as director.
Fast forward to this year, a remake is officially underway with Kosinski behind the camera, whose next film, F1 with Brad Pitt, releases in theaters this June. He is also set to start work on an untitled UFO thriller for Apple, so it’ll be a while until we get more details about the new Miami Vice film.
While we don’t know anything about the plot just yet, we can be sure that it’s based on the neon-hued series that took over the ’80s. Casting details have also not been announced.
