5 Things You May Have Missed In Miami Last Week: Jan 10

There’s a lot to catch up with this week in the 305. Here are our top 5 highlights:

1. Miami-born actor Sidney Poitier passed away at 94

The Bahamian actor, activist and former ambassador passed away early on Friday, January, 7. His death was announced by Bahamas Minister of Foreign affairs Fred Mitchell. Sir Sidney Poitier, who was born in Miami and raised in the Bahamas, was the first Black man and Bahamian actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1964 for his performance in Lillies of the Field  (1963). His groundbreaking work as an actor during the 50s and 60s paved the way for generations of Black actors.

2. Masks are now obligatory in all indoor spaces across Miami Beach

Given the recent rise in COVID-19 cases, Miami Beach officials have made wearing a mask while indoors compulsory once again. As of January 3, masks are required to be worn in all indoor city facilities in order to ensure Miamians’ safety and to help curb the spread of the virus. 3. Miami-Dade County could be getting a new area code soon

Sounds like the 305 is getting yet another area code. The Florida Public Service Commission revealed earlier in December that it was planning a workshop to come up with the new number for December 21.  While it took 51 years for the 305 to run out it sounds like the 786 will run out in half the time as the Commission expects the 786 codes to be fully used up by the first quarter of 2024. That’s just 26 years!
