Buckle up for some hotter-than-usual temperatures this week, as the city officially has its first heat advisory of the year. The National Weather Service has placed Miami-Dade County under a heat advisory that will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. This is the first heat advisory issued in the month of May in at least 15 years for Miami, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
While temperatures are expected to rise to the mid-90s, there’s a possibility it could feel as high as 107 when you factor in the humidity with the heat.
During the heat advisory, residents are residents are encouraged to remember the following:
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Stay indoors, in an air-conditioned room, when possible
- Check up on relatives and neighbors, especially young children and the elderly
- Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing.
- Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
- For outdoor workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
- Walk pets early in the morning and give them access to plenty of water.
- If you don’t have air conditioning, seek relief from the heat in places like libraries, malls and community centers.
Residents should also be on the lookout for symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as lightheadedness, confusion, weakness or fainting. Seek medical attention when there are signs. For more on how to beat the heat, visit miamidade.gov/heat.
Despite the heat advisory, the hot temps won’t end on Friday. Temperatures are forecast to soar in the 90s through the weekend so remember to keep cool — and stay safe, Miami!
