As the heavy rain brings flooded streets and thunderstorms all throughout South Florida, it’s also caused major issues with air travel. Hundreds of flights have been delayed and cancelled at Miami International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airports — even the Florida Panthers took off hours after their scheduled departure to Canada for the next Stanley Cup games!
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL) officials took to X earlier today to announce flight schedule impacts as there was standing water at the airport and neighboring roadways. Additionally, flooding at the entrance and exit was slowing traffic flow coming in and out of the airport.
According to FlightAware, which shares the status of flights around the country, FLL has experienced 171 delays, along with 284 total cancellations, as of 9 p.m.
Those flying in and out of MIA were affected by 391 delays and 329 cancellations, also as of 9 p.m. Flights arriving to MIA on average were delayed by nearly an hour, while departures were delayed by an average of 35 minutes.
All the flight disruptions have even had Miami land on FlightAware’s “Misery Map,” a live visualization that you can find here.
Both airports have urged travelers to check with their airline for the most up-to-date flight information. There are online flight trackers to help users check the status of their flights, even allowing them to be filtered by time range and airline.
For MIA travelers, your flight status can be tracked here. If you have your flight number and want to search by flight or route, this other MIA tracker can be easier in helping you find the information you’re looking for.
FTL flyers can click here for their online flight tracker, which also works by flight or route.
In addition to flights, a flood watch is in effect for all of South Florida through Thursday night. We hope the weather and flight madness gets figured out soon — have a safe trip!
