This Friday, July 10, Ocean Drive will transform into a sea of red, white and navy as part of a viral ‘Viking Row’ celebration. Locals and visitors are invited to join fans in this high-energy, faux rowing chant to rally behind the national team.
What’s the ‘Viking Row’?
Originating from Norway’s official supporters’ club, Oljeberget Supporterklubb, the “ro” is a display of fan unity. All you have to do is sit on the ground and reach your arms forward as if gripping an imaginary oar. Then sway back and forth to the beat of a drum or rhythm of the chants, almost like rowing an ancient Viking longship.
The trend recently took over New York’s Times Square, as a massive crowd gathered to shout “Ro! Ro! Ro!” in unison:
When and where to join the Miami celebration
Norwegian fans will be putting on two public demonstrations on Ocean Drive and 5 Street on Friday; with the first at 2 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m.
The City of Miami Beach is keeping the fun going by also hosting a World Cup watch party right in Lummus Park (Ocean Drive and 14th Street). Kick back at 3 p.m. to watch the quarterfinal matchup between Belgium and Spain.
