New changes are coming to Miami International Airport! Following the approval of a $600.6 million investment by Miami-Dade County Commissioners, the airport is set to gain a new concourse for the first time in over two decades.
The addition, made to keep up with the growing demand for flights, marks a major milestone in the airport’s much larger, $9 billion Future-Ready Modernization in Action plan. The project aims to accommodate 77 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo by 2040. Last year alone, MIA saw nearly 56 million passengers and handled more than 3 million U.S. tons of freight.
MIA’s first new concourse in over 20 years
According to a press release, the expansion includes the construction of the new Concourse K which will feature six contact gates, a ground support equipment maintenance facility, modernized baggage handling systems and critical airfield infrastructure upgrades.
Other planned features include the construction of an associated aircraft apron with a jet fuel hydrant system and two new baggage make-up carousels. It would also be designed to meet LEED Silver certification standards.
Led by Perez & Perez Architects as the lead architect and Lemartec-NV2A JV as contractor, the concourse is expected to break ground this summer and completed by spring 2029.
Take a look at a video of the new Concourse K at MIA, which appears to show that it will be located at the South Terminal:
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said: “MIA has not seen a terminal expansion since 2007, making this a truly transformative milestone for our airport. The launch of Concourse K will not only increase capacity and create thousands of new jobs but also reinforce MIA’s role as a premier Global Gateway.”
