As if the persistent heat advisories weren’t enough, an air quality alert is in effect for parts of Miami-Dade.
The Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management issued the alert for inland, coastal, metropolitan and far south communities until 3 p.m. Tuesday, for fine particulates concentrations that may approach or exceed unhealthy standards.
Air quality is measured using the Air Quality Index (AQI) scale, which classifies air conditions by health risk levels. You can see the current AQI for your region on airnow.gov.
The alert comes as several fires reported last week continue to burn. The largest blaze, Quarry 2, has burned 19,018 acres and is now 97% contained. The Well Fire is at 2,749 acres and 85% contained, while the recent Corrections Fire has burned 305 acres and 15% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service Active Wildfire Points map.
To keep safe, officials advise that everyone limit outdoor activities, modify workouts to become less intense and head indoors to air-conditioned spaces if they experience increased coughing or trouble breathing.
