As Miami Art Week begins, the city is set to unveil a remarkable new installation by renowned South African artist, Daniel Popper.
Named Lumen, this ethereal giant will tower over the 2nd Ave entryway of Society Wynwood, a dynamic mixed-use apartment community. At 30 feet tall and completely covered in cracked tile mosaic, the gorgeous new sculpture is truly a sight to behold.
“This piece is deeply inspired by Wynwood’s vibrant history and creative spirit, with organic, vine-like structures symbolizing the hidden energy and resilience beneath the city’s surface,” Popper said in a release. “It’s an honor to contribute to the artistic legacy of Wynwood, a place that has inspired me and so many others.”
Lumen is a botanical term for internal channels in plants, with the sculpture becoming a symbol of unseen connections and resilience beneath the urban landscape.
You can be among the first to lay eyes on the piece at its official unveiling on Wednesday, December 4. The event will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the artist himself and the development firm behind Society Wynwood, PMG, followed by a pop-up light mapping activation. This will transform the larger-than-life structure into a dynamic experience, with vibrant projections bringing it to life.
The light mapping shows will run every 15 minutes throughout the evening, so there’s no way you’ll miss it!
Popper is known for his mega installations around the globe, including at music festivals like Electric Forest, Burning Man and Art With Me. We even have one residing with our northern neighbors in Fort Lauderdale! His works blend art, technology and music, often collaborating with other artisans and technicians to incorporate electronic music, intricate lighting and projection mapping.
Unlike other temporary art popping up around Miami during Art Basel’s run, Lumen will remain permanently at Society Wynwood. Make sure to pay her a visit at 2431 NW 2nd Ave., Miami, FL 33127. If you plan on attending the official unveiling on Wednesday, the free and open-to-the-public event will begin at 7 p.m.
