In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that recently struck Venezuela, Miami’s local community has banded together to help in any way it can. From donations that involve canned goods and first-aid kits to proceeds from restaurant dishes going towards those in need, many organizations have joined the cause.
Among them, Bookleggers Library is stepping up to provide a different — yet vital — form of aid: children’s books.
“Bookleggers is collecting lightly used kids books in Spanish to help those in need in Venezuela! Please make your donations during bookstore hours 🫶 thank you,” the business wrote in an Instagram post, calling on the public to show their support with a literary donation.
Reading is crucial for children, so by donating books in the aftermath of the crisis, you’re ensuring that all kids in need have access to good books!
How you can help: drop-off details
You can drop off new or lightly used children’s books in Spanish, as well as coloring books, at 561 NW 32nd St, Miami, FL 33127 during opening hours (Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.). If you have a large stack, bring your donations in a box or bag that you can easily carry yourself.
Additionally, an Amazon wish list with options that can be shipped directly to Bookleggers has been shared by photographer Diana Espin, who has collaborated on Instagram reels with the library.
About Bookleggers
Bookleggers Library, a nonprofit mobile library and the city’s only free bookstore, has been expanding access to literature across local communities since its inception in 2012. Founded by writer and editor Nathaniel Sandler, the organization operates a physical storefront within the Bakehouse Art Complex and relies on donations to stock its collection and give away books at no cost. They also host pop-up events at unexpected locations throughout the year.
