Essential systems are stalling across the globe due to a major technology outage linked to cybersecurity provider CrowdStrike. It has left everything from credit card payments at small businesses to flights at major airlines experiencing issues, with users reporting the “blue screen of death” error worldwide.
Miami is no exception to those experiencing the outage, as the City of Miami took to X Friday morning to state that its online customer services have been affected. However, both 911 systems for the City and Miami-Dade County have been unaffected.
The Office of Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has also reported that Port Miami and all public transportation systems are operating without issues.
The same cannot be said for flights going to and from Miami, along with airports around the world that have been affected. The FAA confirmed that Delta, American Airlines, and United requested a global ground stop on all flights. This morning, United and American Airlines, a major carrier at MIA, posted on X that systems are starting to pick back up.
“Earlier this morning, a technical issue with a vendor impacted multiple carriers, including American,” American Airlines said on X. “As of 5:00AM ET, we have been able to safely re-establish our operation.”
Flight disruptions in South Florida
Miami International Airport (MIA) has warned passengers of the outage affecting all airlines. International passenger arrivals are currently being processed manually at a slower pace as well.
“Due to a global Microsoft system outage, departures and arrivals at Miami International Airport are currently delayed. Passengers are urged to contact their airline to confirm their flight status before coming to MIA this morning and to make other travel arrangements, if necessary,” the airport said.
Additionally, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) took to X to state, “Flight delays are expected, so travelers should check with their airline for updated flight status before coming to #FLL.”
