A new study aimed at finding the nation’s biggest sweet tooth by looking at the online appetite for sugary treats and physical availability of dessert shops has crowned Miami the sweet tooth capital of the U.S.
The study, conducted by online betting site Betway, crowned the Magic City with a near-perfect score of 99, beating out other metropolitan areas through a combination of how often residents search for online keywords like “chocolate” and “donuts” to the number of bakeries, cookie shops and ice cream parlors.
Why Miami took the crown
As the “sweetest” city in the country, it isn’t about having the most shops. It’s about having the highest concentration of shops and cravings relative to the city’s size.
Despite a population of 500,000, Miami boasts a whopping 123 bakeries, 51 ice cream parlors and 135 dessert shops. This paired with 70,000 online mentions of sweet treats highlights the city’s clear obsession with all things decadent.
A Betway spokesperson said: “Miami’s dessert culture is as vibrant and diverse as the city itself. From Latin-inspired bakeries to high-end dessert bars, it offers something for every kind of sweet tooth. What really stands out is how this translates both offline and online, with strong demand matched by a huge number of places to indulge.”
Additionally, the study notes that Miami’s year-round climate naturally supports a thriving ice cream and frozen dessert market.
