Everyone knows that one of the best ways to beat the heat is by taking a refreshing dip in cool water. While you can head to one of Miami’s many beaches this summer, fighting for a spot on the crowded sands isn’t really the relaxing escape you may have in mind.
But tucked away in the tree-lined neighborhood of Coral Gables lies a historic secret even some locals forget to take advantage of.
Dating back to 1926, the pool at The Biltmore Hotel isn’t just any pool. Spanning approximately 23,000 square feet with a volume of 600,000 gallons, this piece of Florida history is one of the largest swimming pools in the Continental U.S. and the single largest hotel pool on the East Coast!
Lined by grand Mediterranean architecture and classical statues, doing laps or having a leisurely float here feels like stepping into a European estate. In the early days, it was the site of grand aquatic shows with Esther Williams and where Johnny Weissmuller, the most famous actor to portray Tarzan, served as swimming instructor.
Fashion shows, diving exhibitions and opulent parties could be seen here, too.
How to take a dip without a room key
While The Biltmore pool maintains an air of exclusivity, getting into the pool isn’t as difficult as you’d think. Non-hotel guests can access this tranquil oasis by booking one of nine private cabanas, tucked behind palms and bougainvillea. Options include a Cabana Suite (Large) with a maximum occupancy of eight guests, and a Cabana Deluxe (Small) with a maximum occupancy of four.
Perfect for splurging on a lavish weekend staycation, amenities include teakwood loungers, banana leaf ceiling fans, flat screen TVs and a dedicated server bringing ice-cold drinks and fresh bites from the poolside Cascade restaurant.
Dine directly by the pool
If you simply want to get a glimpse of the crystal blue waters without diving in, another option is to book a dining reservation. Quite literally on the edge of the pool under a cascading 23-foot waterfall, Cascade is an al fresco restaurant perfect for breakfast, lunch or to grab drinks during daily happy hour.
Since it typically closes by late afternoon, you also can’t go wrong at any of the property’s other restaurants like Fontana and the 19th Hole, which give you the perfect excuse to walk through the historic grounds and take a peek.
