Traveling to nearly every state the nation, from quaint New England towns to vibrant cities like Los Angeles and Chicago, The New York Times has released its annual list of restaurants it considers the 50 best in America. And on that list of their “50 favorite places in America right now,” happens to be two spots right here in Miami: a Buena Vista pizzeria that’s not JUST a pizzeria and a historic seafood joint in Little Havana.
First up is Walrus Rodeo, the funky restaurant from the team behind Michelin Award-winning Boia De. Its menu is centered around its wood-fire grill, which makes for some drool-worthy pies unlike any other. However, it’s not the pizza here that had the NYT talking — it’s their lasagna.
“A slice of lasagna at Walrus Rodeo is thin, with a dark, charred surface. From a distance it looks like a healthy serving of parmigiana. Forkfuls reveal wilted mustard greens, tangy stracchino, lamb ragù hinting of moussaka,” the publication writes.
And yes, you should still order at least one pizza despite the restaurant living up to its “not just a pizzeria” tagline, the Times adds.
La Camaronera Seafood Joint and Fish Market also made the list, which many will attest is an essential eat here in the 305. Serving the community since 1973, there’s something to please every palate like their signature “Minuta” sandwich made from fresh yellowtail. It’s served in a Cuban roll and the tail is left on to peek out of the bread.
“The qualities that make [the sandwich] so delicious — notably the fried-to-order crispness of the fresh fish — are found across the menu, which contains some of the South’s best fried seafood and more,” says the NYT, while adding that it is “both hard to miss and hard to resist.” We really couldn’t have said it any better.
Both Miami restaurants round out the list of best restaurants in all of Florida. See which other spots made 2024’s The Restaurant List here.
