Drivers going down the MacArthur Causeway into South Beach will soon be greeted by the giant, colorful sight of a pedestrian bridge currently in the making.
The kaleidoscopic walkway, designed by renowned artist Daniel Buren of Paris’s Les Deux Plateaux and other site-specific works, will connect South of Fifth Baywalk with Alton Road while giving the city a pop of color. It aims to give pedestrians and cyclists a dependable and safer option to get from the beach to the marina, rising 40 feet above Fifth Street.
Known as Canopy Bridge (and also titled “Walking Under, Along, and On The Colors”), it is part of the Five Park development from Terra and Edgewater-based Crescent Heights, including Canopy Park and the adjacent luxury condominium, which holds the title of Miami Beach’s tallest tower.
“The bridge is a striking connector, bringing the larger neighborhood into focus and providing ample opportunity to explore the energy and vibrance of Miami Beach’s artistic enclaves,” the Five Park Miami Beach site reads.
Spanning 158 feet long, pedestrians will be able to “walk” on color as sunlight filters through the panels lining the cylinder structure. There will be openings at the top, allowing for ventilation, and elevators and steps to make it accessible to all.
How far along is construction?
After a three-year wait, construction on the $30 million bridge began earlier this month. The first phase includes the installation of temporary fencing to secure the site, followed by the relocation of underground utilities along Fifth Street. Excavation for the bridge pedestals on both the north and south sides of the causeway is scheduled to occur in the coming months.
When will it be completed?
The bridge is scheduled for completion in the summer or fall of 2026 and an official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for February. You can learn more about the walkable piece of art here.
