Between delays, unexpected cancellations and crowded terminals, flights can be pretty stressful. But here in Miami we’re apparently on another level, which probably comes at no surprise to natives. The city has made it onto yet another list — and this time it’s not so positive.
According to The Bureau of Transportation Statistics, 1.5 million flights experienced departure delays in the U.S. last year. As for which airports were responsible for those delays, analysts at the travel site Family Destinations Guide used the data to find out, revealing the best and worst airports for travel in the country in 2022.
Compiling a list of ten, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Miami International Airport (MIA) find themselves near the top, at third and fifth respectively.
Two additional Florida airports were also ranked, including Tampa International Airport in fourth place and Orlando International Airport at first place for the country’s worst airport for travel in 2022. Taking the second spot is Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
According to the ranking, 26.1% of FLL’s flights saw delays last year, while MIA saw 24.4%.
So, while the Magic City is a popular tourist destination, it unfortunately has a tendency to delay its flights. The good news is a spokesperson from Family Destinations Guide does have advice for when it comes to avoiding delayed flights, stating, “Flights earlier in the day tend to have fewer delays, so try and book an early flight when possible. You could also try and book flights in the middle of the week, on a Tuesday or Wednesday, rather than a weekend, as fewer people travel on these days.”
As for the best U.S. airport for 2022 travel, Salt Lake City International Airport takes that title, with only 14.18% of its 2022 flights experiencing delays.
