We could all use some feel-good news right about now and there’s nothing more heartwarming than the bond between humans and pets, especially during a time of need.
As the threat of Hurricane Milton loomed over Florida earlier this week, animal lovers made their way to Medley Animal Shelter to help our local furry friends. The shelter, located at 7401 NW 74th St., was aiming to get more than 100 of its dogs fostered and the community stepped up in a big way.
Before the storm was expected to hit, there were concerns of keeping the pups safe from flood waters, as many would have been kept in outdoor kennels. As a result, Medley posted a plea to Instagram on Sunday, calling on people to temporarily house them.
“We’re doing everything we can to keep our shelter dogs safe! We urgently need fosters from Tuesday to Saturday,” the caption read, before adding, “Every paw counts!”
Thanks to the local heroes that showed up and formed a line at the shelter, 160 four-legged friends had a place to ride out the storm.
“We did it…. Our one dog at a time networking page on Instagram asked and pleaded for the community to come together and help clear out the medley shelter and [that’s what] we did !!!” user Stefania Bada wrote in a TikTok that has amassed over 170K likes.
While Hurricane Milton has passed and these pets have a home for now, shelters still need your help. Miami-Dade Animal Services shared a post stating that they are running out of supplies and are taking donations from their Amazon Wishlist.
“We’re overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible support from our community,” the post reads. “Every little bit makes a big difference for the furry friends in our care.”
