Miami’s own Marcello Hernández is continuing his run of hometown pride as Netflix confirms the release date for his upcoming stand-up special. Titled American Boy, the hour-long premiere marks the Saturday Night Live star’s first-ever comedy special and offers a glimpse into his upbringing as a first-generation American.
It was taped over the course of several sold-out Miami shows at the Olympia Theater back in September, which had been largely closed for years prior.
“I started comedy at 18 in Cleveland, Ohio at dive bars, small clubs, and poetry slam rooms. 10 years later, stand up has given me everything. If you’ve ever been to a show, put me on a show, given me advice, or supported me in any way, THANK YOU,” he wrote on Instagram.
Joining Saturday Night Live in 2022, Hernández quickly rose to prominence with popular characters like Domingo and sketches that often reflect his Cuban and Dominican heritage. Beyond the New York studio, he has appeared in Happy Gilmore 2 alongside Adam Sandler and is currently filming another Netflix project with Kevin Hart and Teyana Taylor, called 72 Hours. He is also set to have voice roles in the upcoming Shrek 5 and The Angry Birds Movie 3.
Most recently, he was named one of TIME Magazine’s 2025 Latino Leaders, which recognizes influential figures for making significant impacts in their field, from entertainment to sports.
When will American Boy premiere on Netflix?
