The season of love is finally upon us and if you’re thinking about cuddling up on the couch and having a romantic comedy marathon, there’s no better time to do it! But where should you start? Well, there’s one film that seems to be on every Floridian’s watch list this year and it’s 10 Things I Hate About You.
According to a new study by Looper, the 1999 film favorite starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger is the most popular rom-com in all of the Sunshine State. Based on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” the plot follows a high school teen that isn’t allowed to date until her more antisocial, nonconforming older sister does. So a plan is made to set her up with the school’s bad boy.
Floridians aren’t the only ones entertained by the iconic “I love you baby” scene, as Georgia, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, Washington and Wisconsin also favored 10 Things I Hate About You. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal’s When Harry Met Sally was just as popular among other states, followed by holiday classics The Holiday and Love Actually.
Looper looked into IMBb’s list of the 100 best rom-com movies of all time and narrowed the list down to the top 15, using Google Trends to find each movie’s popularity in every U.S. state between February and September. Data from October to January was excluded to prevent seasonal results, considering that certain films are popular around the Christmas season.
According to the study, here are the state’s top 10 favorite rom-coms, ranked by popularity:
- 10 Things I Hate About You
- The Holiday
- The Proposal
- How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
- Love Actually
- Pretty Woman
- The Wedding Singer
- While You Were Sleeping
- When Harry Met Sally…
- Crazy, Stupid, Love
