There’s been no shortage of beautiful celestial events this year, including three spectacular supermoons. Now, the fourth and final one of 2024, called the Beaver Moon, is upon us. This Friday, November 15, look to the sky to see it in all its glory!
What is a supermoon?
While “supermoon” isn’t an official scientific term, it describes when a full moon is closest to Earth than average full moons due to its orbit. This makes it appear larger and brighter from Earth’s perspective, appropriately giving it the supermoon name. Due to its closeness, a supermoon typically appears 30% brighter and 14% larger, resulting in a dazzling sight!
Why is it called Beaver Moon?
As one might assume, the Beaver Moon actually gets its name from beavers. Its name refers to when they begin prepping their dams for the colder months. Tracing back to the fur trade in North America, it’s also a time when beavers are hunted for their thick pelts.
According to Farmer’s Almanac, other common nicknames for November’s spectacle are the Frost Moon, the Freezing Moon and the Whitefish Moon.
When to see the supermoon in Miami
The last of four supermoons, the Beaver Moon, will reach peak illumination on Friday, November 15th at 4:28 p.m. EST. If you’re planning on doing some stargazing, this is the best time to do so, but you’ll have a couple of chances to catch a glimpse this weekend. The moon will actually appear full for three days!
When is the next supermoon?
You won’t want to miss Friday’s supermoon because there won’t be another one until October 2025!
