Commonly mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, the fifth of May actually commemorates Mexico’s victory in the 1862 Battle of Puebla. And while it’s not generally considered a major holiday there, it has become a significant celebration of Mexican American culture and pride in the U.S.
This year, the holiday falls on a Tuesday, pero there’s still plenty of events and promotions going on around the 305 in honor of this fun feast. Not to mention, it also gives us the perfect excuse to down a couple of margs in the middle of the week! Whether you’re looking for a massive block party or culturally rooted dinner, we’ve gathered the best ways to spend your Cinco de Mayo in Miami.

Dubbed the city’s largest Cinco de Mayo block party, Wynwood Marketplace is bringing the energy with multiple DJs spinning Latin beats, live mariachi performances and even mechanical bull rides on May 5th. General admission is free with an RSVP, but you can opt for their open bar option.

Honoring the true history of the holiday, Aventura Mall’s Jacinta is introducing “Five Days of Fiesta.” From May 1 to 5, savor a special Sabores de Puebla menu featuring authentic Pueblan dishes like duck confit enmoladas, chalupitas and rich almond mole. Each evening at 5 p.m., the restaurant pauses for El Brindis (The Toast) to honor Mexico’s 1862 victory at the Battle of Puebla. Then raise a glass with one of their specialty margaritas and catch a live mariachi performance on the big day (May 5).
