In a city known for its nightlife and electronic music, breaking onto the scene can feel like an impossible feat. Well, it’s time to stop daydreaming!
Your Shot, the world’s only DJ competition and music academy designed entirely for beginners, is touching down in Miami this fall and it could be your golden ticket from the dance floor to the decks.
What is Your Shot?
Since launching in 2010, Your Shot has been on a mission to democratize DJ culture across Australia, New Zealand and now the U.S. When factors like gatekeeping, lack of connections and the high cost of gear put off aspiring artists, the program helps participants step into the booth regardless of their background or income.
Last year’s U.S. edition took 500 first-time DJs and gave them full hands-on training, culminating in showcase weekends that drew over 10,000 attendees in both Los Angeles and New York. Your Shot is expanding to include Denver and Miami, and this year’s advisors are DJ/producer and FEMME HOUSE co-founder LP Giobbi, Live Nation Vibee President Harvey Cohen and The Circuit Group (Chris Lake, FISHER).
How it works in Miami
With over 8,300 people pre-registered nationwide, demand for the Miami mentorship program is bound to rise.
Following registration, prospective participants will share their stories at an in-person selection event on Thursday, August 29 at M2 Nightclub. Those selected will then embark on a six-week journey where they’ll learn the fundamentals of mixing, music selection and live performance on professional-grade AlphaTheta controllers and Sony ULT POWER SOUND gear.
The season will culminate in a live showcase right here in the city, where contestants perform their first set in front of a live crowd. Of course, they won’t be doing this just for fun; Your Shot winners will score an opening DJ slot at some of the world’s top music festivals! This year’s prizes include F1 Las Vegas and Insomniac’s EDSea, with more to be announced.
To put it into perspective, last year’s winners Jelly Bean and Punky Butter earned opening sets at Elements Music & Arts Festival and CRSSD.
