Luckily for us, St. Patrick’s Day is fast approaching and if you were hoping to visit a green river for the holiday, you don’t have to travel all the way to Chicago! In our very own Sunshine State — Tampa, to be exact — is the River O’ Green Festival, the city’s take on the iconic green Chicago River.
That’s right! Tampa is known for putting on a green spectacle itself, prompting thousands of people to line along the Riverwalk and get a glimpse of the fun-filled event each year. In honor of St. Patty’s Day, a half-mile stretch of the Hillsborough River turns emerald green, thanks to a non-toxic dye that later dissipates.
While many enjoy the festive atmosphere, some environmental groups have raised concerns about the impacts of the dye on the ecosystem and wildlife. Still, organizers ensure that it is safe, meeting EPA standards and being the same dye often used in drinking water systems.
The free festival, which takes place at Curtis Hixon Park in downtown Tampa, also features live performances, family-friendly activities, giveaways, Irish fare and plenty of beer. Following the river’s transformation, crowds can sit back and watch the Tampa Rough Riders’ official St. Patrick’s Parade, which begins off of East Madison Street.
☘️ History of Tampa’s River O’ Green
While Chicago’s tradition of dyeing its river green has been going on for six decades, Tampa’s traces back to 2012. It was introduced by former Mayor Bob Buckhorn in hopes of engaging the community and celebrating Irish heritage. A now unique way to celebrate the March holiday, the event has since continued on an annual basis.
☘️ What other cities dye their rivers green?
In addition to Tampa and Chicago’s famed traditions, other cities joining the festive spirit by turning their waters green include Charlotte, San Antonio and Washington, D.C.
