The REAL ID deadline is fast approaching — for real this time — which means you’ll need this key document before flying out of Miami. Beginning May 7th, every U.S. traveler that is 18 years or older will need a REAL ID-compliant license or other approved form of identification to board a domestic flight. Otherwise, they may face delays and additional screening when arriving at TSA checkpoint.
So what exactly is a REAL ID? And are you good with your state-issued driver’s license? Here’s everything you need to know before you head on your next flight:
What is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a U.S. state driver’s license or ID card that meets the latest federal security standards. It can be used for air travel or entering most federal facilities, such as nuclear power plants. If a license is REAL ID-compliant, it’ll have a star symbol in the top right corner.
Why has the REAL ID deadline been delayed?
REAL IDs were created following the passage of the REAL ID Act of 2005 after the 9/11 Commission recommended that the government establish minimum security standards for ID issuance. It was initially intended to go into effect in 2008, but was pushed back several times due to operational issues, technical challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic.
That brings us to present day’s REAL ID deadline, which is set for May 7, 2025 with phased enforcement.
How can I get a REAL ID?
Getting a REAL ID in Florida is the same process as obtaining your Florida driver’s license or ID. To apply, head to your nearest DMV, have your picture taken and complete any required exams. You’ll need to provide documentation of your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, two proofs of address of principal residence and legal status.
How do I know if my current license is REAL ID compliant?
If you’ve received a new or renewed driver’s license since January 2010, you’ve definitely got a REAL ID. To check, simply look for a gold star in the upper right-hand corner of your card. If you don’t see one, you’ll need to obtain a REAL ID compliant license or other accepted form of ID in order to fly.
Where can I get a REAL ID in Miami?
The simplest answer is to book an appointment at one of the many DMVs across South Florida here. However, there are reports of DMVs struggling with demand as the REAL ID deadline inches closer and residents should watch out for scalpers.
An alternative way to handle your licensing needs is by visiting the Florida Licensing on Wheels (FLOW) mobile office. You can find a schedule on the FLHSMV website to see its upcoming stops. The DMV on wheels will drive by Miami on May 6, 15, 19 and 27.
How much does a REAL ID cost in Florida?
In Florida, an original Class E license (including a learner’s permit) will cost you $48, a commercial driver’s license (Class A) costs $75 and endorsements are $7 each. Additionally, the fee for an ID card is $25 and most local tax collector offices charge a $6.25 service fee.
Will I need a REAL ID to fly internationally?
No, your REAL ID will work only within the U.S. A valid passport is still required for international travel.
