Lunar-loving Floridians are in for quite the show at the end of this month, as a lunar eclipse is set to grace our night skies! Better known as a “blood moon,” the highly anticipated event will occur the night of Thursday, August 27, and continue into Friday, August 28.
Unlike the total lunar eclipse that was visible earlier this year, this is a partial eclipse covering about 96% of the moon’s surface at maximum, according to NASA. This phenomenon doesn’t happen very often, so you won’t want to miss it! Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming celestial event.
What is a blood moon?
A blood moon is the result of a lunar eclipse, appearing to glow a coppery-red as it passes through Earth’s shadow and blocks most direct sunlight. Its reddish tint comes from a small amount of scattered light that manages to travel through the Earth’s atmosphere. During a partial eclipse, only part of the lunar disk enters the Earth’s dark inner shadow.
How to see the blood moon from Miami
Luckily for us, the phenomenon will be visible across large portions of North America, with the eastern half of the U.S. getting the most dramatic views. Unlike solar eclipses, it is entirely safe to watch with the naked eye and you won’t need special eyewear.
The moon will start to enter the Earth’s shadow at 9:28 p.m. on Thursday night, and end around 3:01 a.m. Friday morning, but the best time to catch a glimpse is at its peak at 12:12 a.m. on Friday, August 28.
For the best shot at seeing the deep partial lunar eclipse, find an area with a clear view of the horizon as it may be challenging to spot. However, your view is fully dependent on weather conditions.
