Ready to get those creative juices flowing? O, Miami and Zak the Baker are once again teaming up for the third annual “Poems for Bread” trade.
The kosher bakery in Wynwood has been known to offer a fresh loaf of bread in exchange for visitor’s poems this time of year. The collaboration aims to celebrate South Florida’s unique culinary identity through poetry and community connection, whether that be gifting a loaf to a neighbor or inviting coworkers to visit the bakery for their lunch break.
How to take part in the “Poems for Bread” exchange

The rules are simple: walk into the bakery anytime during the month of October and pen a haiku on the theme of “Miami food.” Prompt cards will be available at the counter and after you submit your poem to their team, you can choose your free loaf!
Of course, it must be in the form of a haiku, following a three-line, 5-7-5 syllable structure, and about the local food prompt. The offer is limited to one trade per person, per day and includes all fresh bread in the bakery with the exception of braided challah.
On November 14, two lucky winners will be selected — one grand prize winner receiving free bread for a year and the runner-up receiving a native fruit tree.

If you want to try your hand at poetry, be sure to stop by Zak the Baker until October 31st. You’ll find them at 295 NW 26th St, Miami, FL 33127 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except for Saturdays.
Meanwhile, O, Miami is accepting submissions for its 15th annual Poetry Festival: Poetry & Wonder, happening next April. You can learn more about the local arts nonprofit on their website here.
