The Rubell Museum and Superblue Miami are getting a cheeky new neighbor dedicated to, per their press release, “preserving, presenting, and celebrating the cultural significance of human sexuality.”
The Museum of Sex is set to open in spring 2023 in a 32,000 square-foot converted warehouse designed in collaboration with international design studio Snøhetta. The new location is an expansion of the original museum in New York, which opened its doors 20 years ago, and will feature a shop, bar and three large exhibitions (because bigger is better).
Described as “the institution’s most ambitious undertaking yet,” the new location will be home to Hajime Sorayama: Desire Machines, which features the Japanese artists’ famous over 9 feet tall “sexy robot” sculptures, and Modern Sex: 100 Years of Design and Decency, a survey of more than 500 objects dating from the 1920s to the present that investigate social mores and sexual health.
In addition, the Miami museum will feature the fantastical Super Funland: Journey into the Erotic Carnival experience, which has been entertaining visitors in NYC since its launch in 2019. Inspired by the decadent carnal origins of the carnival dating back to the Roman Bacchanal, the multi-layered installation features dazzling amusements and games that play on sexual thrills, humor and decadence.

Except in Miami it’ll be showcased on an even grander scale, bringing together 20 interactive amusements, including never-before-seen additions like Merlandia, a 40-foot-wide rococo-style mermaid tank and performance space, which serves as the centerpiece for the carnival.
“We are excited to reach this major milestone in our history and to bring our vision to the vibrant cultural landscape of Miami,” executive director and founder of Museum of Sex Daniel Gluck said in a statement. “Our inaugural programming perfectly embodies our ambitions to be a thought-provoking forum around sex and sexuality, and to bring forth a unique, publicly loved, and critically acclaimed cultural offering to Miami.”
In case you were wondering, Miami already has its own “museum of sex.” Founded in 2005 by Naomi Wilzig, the World Erotic Art Museum in Miami Beach features an impressive collection of art and artifacts from around the world.
