Over the weekend, the Miami Marlins made history in more ways than one! The team completed a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees for the first time ever, bringing them to a .500 record (55-55). It also gave Miami the distinction of being the only team in the MLB to not have a losing record against New York (including postseason, by the way).
A weekend for the history books at loanDepot Park
On Sunday, August 3rd, the Marlins secured a 7-3 win at home with a final jab at their competitors by playing “Sweet Caroline” at the start of the ninth inning. The Neil Diamond classic is a Red Sox tradition, longtime rivals of the Yankees.
During the series, a historic crowd was there to witness the sweep — setting an all-time home attendance record of 101,545! The Marlins saw 32,299 spectators on Friday, 34,645 on Saturday and 34,601 on Sunday.
With this victory, the Marlins are now 55-55 on the season for the first time since April 15. Needless to say, fans left the ballpark on a high celebrating the monumental occasion and what’s to come for the rest of the season. In fact, the Marlins went into Sunday’s game with a 1.2% chance of reaching the playoffs by FanGraphs, according to MLB.com.
