Two wildfires that broke out over the weekend are keeping South Florida responders working around the clock, with the largest one at 70% containment, according to the most recent update from the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Florida Forest Service.
Burning just west of U.S. 27 and Pines Boulevard, this fire, known as the Max Road Fire, has scorched 11,339 acres as of Tuesday, May 12. Helicopters could be seen dropping water on the flames.
Meanwhile, the 172 Avenue Fire over in Florida City near Southwest 344th Street and South Dixie Highway sits at 300 acres and 50% contained. Fortunately, first responders have kept the flames away from nearby structures, and no buildings have been affected.
What this means for locals
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Miami is currently sitting in the Good to Moderate range (averaging around 30 to 65 AQI, depending on your exact neighborhood). With the fire actively burning in the Everglades however, those living in Miramar, Weston, Pembroke Pines or anywhere near the fires, should keep their windows closed and set the AC to recirculate so they aren’t pulling smoky air into their house.
And while the 172 Avenue Fire is “under control,” officials warn of hazy conditions and reduced visibility on the road, so drive with extreme caution:
Looking forward, meteorologists say there is a chance of showers in the forecast for today. While we won’t be needing the thunderstorms, a good downpour could be exactly what our firefighters need to finish containing both of these blazes.
