JetBlue flyers, listen up! A major change is coming to Miami International Airport (MIA) this fall. Beginning September 3rd, the airline will end all its operations at the airport, giving passengers who have already booked a flight the chance to divert it to another airport or receive a refund.
The announcement was made over the weekend by the New York-based carrier, which currently offers one or two daily flights between Boston and Miami. The airline first expanded to MIA in 2021 with the goal of increasing its presence in the region and, at one point in time, was operating as many as 14 daily flights.
Why is JetBlue stopping service at MIA?
The airline cited multiple factors for pulling out of Miami International Airport, such as profitability and falling demand.
“To free aircraft for new routes, we’ve recently made the decision to end a small number of unprofitable flights including between Boston and Miami,” Derek Dombrowski, director of corporate communications, stated in an email sent to the Miami Herald. “We continually evaluate how our network is performing and make changes as needed.”
Can I still fly JetBlue in South Florida?
The good news is JetBlue will continue its presence at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL), where it is actually the second-largest carrier after Spirit. As reported by the Herald, JetBlue served about 6.8 million passengers at the Broward County airport in 2024.
The airline will also operate flights to and from Palm Beach International Airport (PBI).
What to do if this affects your travel plans
With service scheduled to end in September, there are plenty of passengers who have already booked flights with JetBlue in or out of MIA. They will be given two options: rebook on a different flight, possibly to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, or receive a full refund to their original form of payment.
