While most locals flock to the popular Anhinga Trail and 15-mile loop of Shark Valley, the Everglades’ newest nature walk offers a different kind of vantage point for South Florida’s wetlands.
Located along Alligator Alley near Weston, the Everglades Elevated Boardwalk lifts visitors above the marshland, offering front-row seats to one of the most unique ecosystems in the world. It allows you to float above the sawgrass and lilypad-covered waters without disturbing the ecosystem below.
As you walk along the wooden ramp, you’ll find a three-story, 40-foot observation tower perfect for photographing sunsets and golden-hour skies. Thanks to its unique vantage point, orchids and many air plants can be spotted nestled in the cypress canopy, while alligators frequently rest along the water’s edge.
Herons, egrets and wood storks can also be seen wading through the shallow marshes.
It’s not only a great spot to look for wildlife from a safe distance, but you can read from the many informative plaques about the thousands of native plants and local aquatic species that you might see.
Even better? The path was built to be fully accessible by the Florida Department of Transportation. Wheelchair users, parents with strollers and those with reduced mobility can all experience the beautiful location and equally stunning views. Just be sure to visit during the coolest temperatures of the day (early morning or late afternoon), and don’t forget your sunscreen and bug spray!
Getting there
You can find the free Everglades Elevated Boardwalk around Mile Marker 35 on Alligator Alley (35000 Everglades Parkway, Weston, FL). It’s dog-friendly as well, so your leashed pets are welcome to walk with you!
