You might think you’ve been transported to medieval Europe, but this surreal destination is actually located along the Florida coast! A gem so hidden that even some of the most seasoned of locals have yet to discover it.
Towering over Vilano Beach just north of St. Augustine, Castle Otttis (yes, with tree ‘t’s) is one of those places that looks like it was plucked straight out of 11th-century Ireland. It stands at an impressive 50 feet tall and weighs more than 7 million pounds.
Despite its ancient appearance, Castle Otttis wasn’t built all that long ago. Nor was it constructed for royalty. The massive structure came to be between 1984 and 1988 thanks to the work of just two men, Ottis Sadler and Rusty Ickes.
Setting out to create an impression of an Irish abbey or early Christian church from 1,000 years ago, they used split-face concrete blocks and reinforced steel for the exterior without the help of laborers or models.
The interiors are just as impressive, with master woodworker Lee Carpenter spending three years outfitting the inside with cypress wood staircases, an altar, Bishop’s chair, choir loft and spiritual symbols throughout. To make the castle feel more integrated with nature, all 88 window openings were also left without glass.
How to see this spectacular stone fortress for yourself
Unlike other attractions throughout the state, Castle Otttis remains privately owned and a true hidden gem for travelers who are lucky enough to get inside. It is highly sought after as a venue for intimate weddings, and if you’re just looking to explore its history, tours are occasionally available but only by appointment.
“The building was never intended to be a residence, a commercial building, nor a tourist attraction. It was created as an expression of art,” the castle’s official website reads.
Even if you don’t go inside, driving north on Highway A1A offers a spectacular view of the fortress standing out among the neighboring coastal homes. After all, it’s not every day you get to see a castle perched among the greenery in the Sunshine State!
