When you think of the best beaches in the entire world, what destinations come to mind? Surely, Florida boasts hundreds of remarkable beaches, thanks to its long stretch of coastline and year-round perfect weather. In fact, one beach along the Gulf Coast was recently recognized as one of the best in the world by TripAdvisor. Now, another Florida beach is taking the spotlight after being named in National Geographic’s list of the world’s best beaches worth traveling for.
In their new book, 100 Beaches of a Lifetime, the magazine explores the most breathtaking coastlines around the world, from Hawaii’s Papakōlea Beach to Reynisfjara in Iceland. Bowman’s Beach on Sanibel Island claimed the No. 9 spot on the list, and it’s easy to see why. Located a little over 3 hours from Miami, this peaceful retreat is known to offer a treasure trove of hundreds of shell species. Along its expansive white coastline, it is an excellent place to go shelling, where you can find everything from conchs and cockles to junonias and tulips.
The publication writes:
“A quarter-mile (400 m) walk from the road gives the beach a hidden feel, but among beachcombers, it’s famous. Considered one of the best shelling shores in the country, Bowman’s is the beneficiary of its geography, as an underwater shelf scoops the shells of gastropods and bivalves onto the shore like a special delivery from the ocean gods themselves.”
Bowman’s is one of the more secluded beaches compared to others on Sanibel, perfect for a tranquil seaside stroll or catching the sunset. In addition to swimming, you can also fish, go kayaking or bring along a picnic.

There are plenty of hiking trails as well, making it a true bucket-list worthy destination for nature lovers. Even the quarter-mile walk from parking to the shoreline includes a scenic footbridge crossing Clam Bayou where you can view various wildlife like fish, birds, manatees and alligators.
