With the first month of the new year comes the return of King Mango Strut, Coconut Grove’s wildly iconic, satirical parade. On January 4th, prepare for the city’s most hilariously unhinged tradition. We’re talking wonderfully wacky costumes, snarky signs, live bands and all the glorious mischief that has been the parade’s hilarious hallmark for decades. Four decades, to be exact, as this year marks the 42nd anniversary of the mayhem.
The theme for this year? “This is Fine,” based on the popular meme featuring a cartoon dog sipping coffee in front of a fire. Participants are expected to tackle the beautiful bizarre-ness of Miami with a bon vivant attitude under the theme.
“The meme is perfect for a satirical parade because it captures the absurdity of pretending everything’s okay when it clearly isn’t,” said Carl Levin, president of King Mango Strut. “It’s funny, dark, and painfully true to how people often cope with chaos, denial, or dysfunction, whether it’s in politics, the environment, or everyday life.”
Around 10,000 onlookers line the streets each year to watch the free parade, so come prepared to laugh, cheer and dance along with the many costumed “Strutters” down the road. And as always, all are welcome to join the madness. Seriously, dig out your most creative costume and be part of the show!

King Mango parade route and after-party
The Strut kicks off at the corner of Commodore Plaza and Main Highway at 2 p.m. From there, the procession swings left onto Main Highway, another left onto Grand Avenue at CocoWalk and finally back to Commodore Plaza. And because a good party doesn’t quit, stick around for live entertainment and ongoing festivities right there on Commodore Plaza!

About the King Mango Strut
Put on each year by the non-profit King Mango Productions, Inc., the irreverent parade originated as a parody of the now-defunct King Orange Bowl Jamboree Parade by founders Glenn Terry and Bill Dobson. They were denied entry from the event for their use of unconventional instruments like kazoos, conch shells and garbage can drums — so naturally, they decided to throw their own much better bash. Inspired by what’s weird and wonderful about Miami and the year that was, the event puts “the ‘NUT’ in Coconut Grove.”
