Last year, we shared the sad news that the iconic Shorty’s BBQ on South Dixie Highway was slated for demolition, as first reported by the Miami New Times. Now, after seven decades in business, the South Florida landmark has announced when it will serve its last guests.
According to a recent Instagram post, the original Dadeland location is set to close on Sunday, December 27, 2026.
“As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we want to thank everyone who has been part of our story. Your love, memories, and support mean everything to us,” the heartfelt caption reads.
But while it’s the end of an era for this location, Shorty’s confirmed that its Bird Road and Davie locations are “STILL OPEN and STILL SMOKIN’.” In fact, both of those outposts have recently received updates to ensure the tradition lives on for years to come.
“Both restaurants have recently received updates, and we remain committed to serving the same great BBQ and carrying on the traditions generations of South Floridians have come to love,” the chain noted in the post. “Our catering team also continues to serve Miami-Dade and Broward, from gatherings of 10 to events of 10,000 guests!”
The end of an era
Founded in 1951 by E.L. “Shorty” Allen, Shorty’s quickly became a local institution known for its hickory-smoked ribs, signature coleslaw and classic corn on the cob. Over the decades, the beloved eatery weathered its fair share of challenges, surviving countless storms, Hurricane Andrew and even a devastating fire that required the building to be completely rebuilt.
In 2022, developers purchased the property housing the original Shorty’s for $14.5 million and had continued to lease it back to the establishment in order to continue operating at that location, according to the New Times.
As the location counts down its final days, the Shorty’s team is inviting locals to come by, enjoy their favorite BBQ dishes and make a few more memories before its doors close for good.
