The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently announced a recall affecting Florida, New York, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio involving a specific brand of frozen smoked salmon that could pose a serious health risk.

On October 16, New York-based distributor Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. issued a voluntary recall for its Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced. Here’ s what to look for on the package:

Why has it been recalled?
According to the FDA, the salmon has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can survive and even grow in refrigerated temperatures. While healthy adults might experience short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infections can be incredibly dangerous for young children, frail or elderly individuals and those with weakened immune systems. A Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the frozen salmon, according to the FDA.
Consumers who have the product are urged not to consume it and discard or return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.
